Westminster Short & Larger Catechisms, Westminster Confession of Faith

Welcome to this website.

My name is Dave Landis. I teach the Westminster Shorter Catechism to seventh and eight graders at my church, Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church in San Jose, California.   This is a very rich, yet compact document teaching the rudiments of the Christian faith.  One of my friends, upon viewing it, called it “freeze-dried Christianity.”   Very aptly put.

The purpose of this website is to provide an on-line version of the Westminster Standards and point people to useful resources to expand their knowledge of the Westminster Standards, as well as other solid Reformed literature and resources.

If you are not familiar with Presbyterian beliefs, you may be asking yourself what are the Westminster Standards?   Well, Presbyterians like to ask questions, so two of the standards are catechisms: a question and answer format for inculcating the teachings of Scripture.   The Westminster Standards are:

  1. The Westminster Shorter Catechism;  107 questions and answers.
  2. The Westminster Larger Catechism:  197 questions and answers.  They tend to be expansions of what is found in the Westminster Shorter Catechism.
  3. The Westminster Confession of Faith.   a formal statement of faith comprising of thirty-three chapters.

Some Presbyterian congregations sing the Psalms exclusively in their worship service.   The Scottish Psalter, is the original psalter used by Presbyterians, although several more modern versions now exist.  The tunes from the Scottish Psalter tend to be in common or long meter.   A wonderful thing about singing from the Psalter is that you are singing Scripture and it is a wonderful way to retain what that Psalms say in your memory!

I hope you enjoy this website and make use of the resources which I’m providing to supplement the Westminster Standards.
